The Television Academy and Amazon’s Prime Video yesterday announced a six-year deal making the streaming service the exclusive global home of the Emmys, ending the awards show’s rotation among US broadcast networks.
The deal will take effect with the 2027 ceremony and ends the traditional ‘Wheel Deal’ rotation under which the telecast alternated among broadcast networks ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC, concluding with this year’s show, a Reuters report stated yesterday.
Traditional television networks face growing competition from streaming services, which have increasingly taken on major live events and awards shows as viewing habits shift toward digital platforms.
Organisers of the annual Academy Awards said last year that the Oscar telecast was moving from the ABC broadcast network to stream live on YouTube around the world starting 2029.
The Emmy Awards ceremony will continue to air live in September but will be available free to viewers worldwide, with no Prime Video subscription required, Amazon said.
The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
For Prime Video, the agreement adds another high-profile live entertainment property to a service that has expanded through original films and television shows, sports and other streaming partnerships.
The Emmys, first held in 1949, honour achievements in television acting, production and writing, among other areas.
The awards have traditionally served as a major promotional and cultural event for the US television industry.
Meanwhile, a joint statement issued by the two partners yesterday — and accessed by Indianbroadcastingworld.com — quoted Television Academy chair Cris Abrego as saying “television has never been more global, and the Emmys should be a celebration that the world can share.”
Abrego added: “Now Prime Video audiences in more than 200 countries will be able to experience the Emmys live with no subscription required. Our broadcast partners have been tremendous stewards of the Emmys for many years, helping to build them into the cultural institution they are today.
“Having a dedicated home with Prime Video allows us to build on that legacy with unprecedented global reach and a broader commitment to the Television Academy and our mission throughout the year.”
Commenting on the deal Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios head Mike Hopkins observed that for nearly eight decades the Emmys have recognized the best storytelling and talent in television, and “we’re honoured that Prime Video will be trusted as the global home for this celebration over the next six years.”
“Streaming the Emmys free on Prime Video is another way we’re delivering the best in entertainment to our customers worldwide,” he added.
