National Award-winning filmmaker Vinod Kapri’s Hindi film ‘Pyre’ is set to release in theatres on October 23, 2026. The film is set in Uttarakhand and tells the story of an ageing couple.

According to a PTI report from New Delhi today, the film follows the couple as they spend their lives around their home and memories while waiting for their children, who have moved away in search of better opportunities.

Kapri has cast two local residents, Padam Singh and Hira Devi, in the lead roles. Padam Singh is a retired Indian Army soldier, while Hira Devi is a farmer. Neither of them had acted before working on the film, and both are from Berinag Tehsil in Uttarakhand’s Pithoragarh district.

Kapri said he wanted to tell the story through people who had experienced a similar life themselves. He said the relationship, emotions and silences of the two actors helped bring authenticity to the film.

‘Pyre’ has already received recognition at international film festivals. The film has won 18 international awards, including 15 Best Film awards. It has also received Best Director awards in Serbia and Boston, along with recognition for music, cinematography and sound.

The film’s music has been composed by Academy Award-winning composer Mychael Danna, while German editor Patricia Rommel has also worked on the project. Veteran lyricist Gulzar has contributed a song to the film. ‘Pyre’ is produced by Vinod Kapri, Suresh Joshi and Arindra Rai Chaudhuri and will be distributed theatrically by Cinépolis.
