Netflix is lining up a broad September slate spanning returning favourites, new dramas, documentaries, reality shows and a substantial catalogue of films, with ‘The Gentlemen’ Season 2, ‘Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story’, ‘Best of the Best’, ‘A Different World’ and ‘Wonka’s The Golden Ticket’ among the highlights.
The month opens with a mix of new releases and familiar films, according to a feature news in Netflix Tudum yesterday.
‘Untold Raygun: Breaking Badly’, arriving September 1, follows breakdancer Rachael ‘Raygun’ Gunn from her life as an Australian academic to the Olympic stage and the global meme status that followed. The same day brings ‘17 Again’, in which Matthew Perry’s Mike gets the chance to relive his youth, alongside ‘About Time’, ‘Alien’ and ‘Aliens’.
Netflix is also loading up on well-known films, including ‘Jaws’, ‘Jaws 2’, ‘Jaws 3’and ‘Jaws: The Revenge’, as well as ‘Liar Liar’, ‘Phantom Thread’, ‘Ready or Not’, ‘Scarface’, ‘Sleepless in Seattle’ and ‘Straight Outta Compton’. The September 1 slate also features ‘The Blues Brothers’, ‘Big Daddy’, ‘Cruel Intentions’ and ‘The Texas Chainsaw Massacre’.
Among the first major series arrivals is ‘The Gentlemen’ Season 2 on September 3. Eddie, played by Theo James, plans to expand his empire, while Susie, played by Kaya Scodelario, looks for new ways to diversify the business.
The day also brings ‘Smile 2’, which follows a pop star haunted by a sinister entity as she attempts to mount a comeback tour.
September’s documentary slate ranges from music and social history to technology and true crime. ‘Fito Páez: The World Within a Song’ chronicles more than a year in the life of the Spanish-language music star, covering recordings, rehearsals, tours, performances, loves, heartbreaks, failures and triumphs.
‘Turning Point: Generation 9/11’ uses firsthand accounts to examine, 25 years later, how the September 11 attacks shaped a generation.
On September 10, ‘Call My Agent! The Movie’ reunites the characters five years after ASK Agency closed, after Andréa loses her lead actor days before filming and brings the old team back together.
September 11 brings ‘Physical 100: Italy’, in which 100 Italian athletes face physical challenges to determine a champion, while ‘Tribeca 25’ looks back at 25 years of the Tribeca Festival and how storytelling helped rebuild a community after 9/11.
The middle of the month turns darker, with ‘Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story’ arriving September 17. Ella Beatty plays Lizzie Borden, who, trapped in a cruel Victorian household, kills her parents in an axe murder that shocks the nation.
The same date brings Season 2 of ‘Stranger Things: Tales From ’85’, where the gang confronts ghostly apparitions and strange creatures as Valentine’s Day approaches.
September 18 brings ‘Best of the Best’, centred on childhood friends Maya and Anjali as they join UCLA’s competitive Bollywood-fusion dance team and discover that the race for a US championship is far more cutthroat than expected.
Later in the month, ‘Wonka’s The Golden Ticket’ sends 12 Golden Ticket winners and their chosen partners into Wonka’s Chocolate Factory for games and challenges designed to test them physically, mentally and morally, with only one contestant taking the life-changing prize.
The month closes with another mix of new concepts and returning worlds.
‘A Different World’, arriving September 24, follows Deborah, daughter of Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert, as she begins at Hillman College and tries to build a legacy beyond her parents’ shadow.
September 29 brings ‘LEGO ONE PIECE’ and ‘Mononoke The Movie: Chapter Ⅲ – The Curse of the Serpent’, while September 30 rounds out the slate with MMA competition ‘The Arena’ and true-crime documentary ‘The Widower: ’Til Death Do Us Part’.
