Netflix is getting ready to offer short videos on its platform as it looks to compete with popular apps like TikTok and YouTube. The company has signed deals with some of the biggest media publishers in the US to bring bite-sized content to its subscribers.
According to an AFP report, the new content will include celebrity interviews, lifestyle tips, news and how to videos. Netflix has partnered with publishers such as Penske Media, BuzzFeed Studios, Conde Nast, Hearst Magazines and People Inc. The videos will be between 2 and 20 minutes long.
The short videos will start rolling out from August 3 for Netflix users in the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. Subscribers will be able to watch content from popular brands like Vanity Fair, Vogue, Rolling Stone, Bon Appétit, People and Variety. Some well known series, including Vanity Fair’s ‘Lie Detector’, ‘BuzzFeed’s’ ‘30 Questions’ and Variety’s ‘Know Their Lines?’, will also be available.
Netflix said many viewers want more content related to their favourite shows, movies and celebrities even after they finish watching them. The company believes these short videos will help keep viewers engaged for longer.
The move comes as Netflix faces tough competition from YouTube and TikTok, which have become popular for short and easy to-watch videos. To attract more viewers, Netflix has already introduced a TikTok style vertical video feed and is also expanding into gaming, podcasts and live events.
