In a bold step towards reshaping the future of journalism in India, Zee Media Corporation Limited has launched PINEWZ, the country’s first hyperlocal, citizen-led news application. Timed to coincide with the 79th Independence Day celebrations, the platform promises to turn passive news consumers into active newsmakers, rooted in the philosophy of ‘आप रिपोर्टर, आप ही एडिटर’ (You are the reporter. You are the editor).
According to a press release from Zee Media, PINEWZ disrupts the traditional top-down news model by placing the tools of journalism directly in the hands of citizens. News will now flow from crowded mohallas, busy marketplaces, quiet campuses, and street corners straight to the national feed, marking a shift from centralized newsroom agendas to grassroots truth-telling. The app is designed as a civic news ecosystem, where local issues — from infrastructure failures to community achievements — can be reported directly by the people, fostering dialogue and driving change.
Equipped with geolocation technology, PINEWZ allows users to track and share stories relevant to their specific PIN code, offering highly personalised, real-time news coverage. Each submission passes through a blend of AI detection, blockchain-backed verification, and editorial oversight, ensuring accuracy while maintaining speed.
“PINEWZ is not just an app. It’s a movement that unites the digital citizen and the grassroots reporter,” said Priyadarshan Garg, Chief Business Officer & Director, PINEWZ. “We are empowering every Indian to document truth, challenge injustice, and celebrate the everyday stories that matter — but are often missed.”
Already tested in several cities during its pilot phase, the platform has delivered impactful grassroots reports, from highlighting civic neglect to alerting communities about emergencies. Zee Media believes that with PINEWZ, the press is returning to its democratic roots — truly becoming “of the people, by the people, for the people.”
