Elon Musk-led X Corp has taken robust action in India, banning a record 3,33,036 accounts between October 26 and November 25, primarily for promoting activities related to child sexual exploitation and non-consensual nudity.
The micro-blogging platform, currently undergoing significant changes under Musk’s leadership, recently appointed Linda Yaccarino as its new CEO. During this period, the platform also removed 2,233 accounts for promoting terrorism on its Indian platform, IANS reported from New Delhi.
X Corp, in compliance with India’s new IT Rules 2021, released its monthly report, revealing that it received 1,062 complaints from Indian users within the same timeframe through its grievance redressal mechanisms.
Moreover, the company processed 52 grievances related to appealing account suspensions. “After reviewing the specifics of the situation, we overturned 1 of these account suspensions. The remaining reported accounts remain suspended,” mentioned the company. Additionally, X received 35 inquiries concerning general account-related queries.
Most complaints from India pertained to issues of hateful conduct (556), followed by abuse or harassment (273), sensitive adult content (122), and impersonation (52).
Under the new IT Rules 2021, significant digital and social media platforms, with user bases exceeding 5 million, are mandated to publish monthly compliance reports.
In the previous reporting period, between September 26 and October 25, X Corp had banned 2,34,584 accounts in India. During this time, the platform also removed 2,755 accounts for promoting terrorism.
In the preceding period, spanning August 26 to September 25, the company enforced bans on 5,57,764 accounts in India, alongside the removal of 1,675 accounts for terrorism-related content.
Simultaneously, amid the Israel-Hamas conflict, X Corp took action against over 3,25,000 pieces of content that violated its terms of service, particularly targeting violent speech and hateful conduct.
The substantial number of account bans and content removals underscore X Corp’s stringent measures to maintain a safer online environment, aligning with regulatory requirements and combating inappropriate content dissemination across its platform.
