At a time when the story of India is being written in boardrooms, laboratories, classrooms, borders, and villages alike, WION’s 79th Independence Day programming will capture the essence of what drives the nation forward.

The special Independence Day’s line-up of shows is designed to connect audiences across 190 countries with the courage, innovation, heritage, and unity that define India today — and inspire a deeper understanding of how these forces will shape the country’s future, a press release from the broadcaster stated.

The day begins at 7  am with live coverage of the Independence Day celebrations, capturing the emotion and grandeur of the flag hoisting and the Prime Minister’s address from the Red Fort. At 10.30 am. ‘India’s Women-Powered Forces’ honours women officers of the Indian Armed Forces — both serving and retired — whose leadership and resolve have broken barriers and strengthened the nation’s defence. Inspiring journeys of military wives who have broken barriers and upheld the highest standards of bravery and courage are also told.

At 1130 am is the ‘Tech at 79’ that charts India’s journey from freedom to global innovation leadership, showcasing indigenous defence advancements, ISRO’s milestones, the transformation of everyday life through digital payments, and the global influence of Indian-origin leaders in technology. At 12.30 pm, the ‘Climate Tracker’ presents the International Solar Alliance’s ‘India at 79’, highlighting the nation’s leadership in renewable energy and its commitment to sustainable growth.

The afternoon focuses on the words and achievements that have shaped India’s modern identity. At 1.30 pm is the Independence Day special ‘Best Speeches’, which revisits the prime ministerial addresses from 2014 to 2024, exploring the themes and messages that have marked each year, including highlights from this year’s speech.

At 2.30 pm is ‘WION Wings’ which takes viewers across engineering marvels like the Chenab and Pamban bridges, the wild beauty of Ranthambore, Bhitarkanika, and Kuno National Parks, and the preserved history of the Partition and PM Museum that are all symbols of a country balancing progress and preservation.

At 3.30 pm ‘E-Club’, the spotlight is on cinema’s role in shaping national consciousness, from the enduring impact of ‘Sholay’, celebrating 50 years, to the modern storytelling of ‘Saare Jahan Se Accha’.

Throughout the day, a special #HarGharTiranga video will air in select bulletins, bringing a shared visual symbol to homes across the country.
