WhatsApp has announced the introduction of ‘Strict Account Settings’, a new high-security feature aimed at protecting users from increasingly sophisticated cyber attacks. Designed as a lockdown-style safeguard, the feature is particularly targeted at journalists, public figures and individuals who may be at higher risk of targeted digital threats.
The new setting adds an extra layer of defence on top of WhatsApp’s existing end-to-end encryption, which already ensures that personal messages and calls remain private. Once Strict Account Settings is enabled, a user’s account is automatically placed under the platform’s most restrictive security controls to minimise potential attack surfaces.
With the feature activated, attachments and media from unknown senders are blocked by default, calls from unfamiliar numbers are silenced, and certain app functions that could be misused during a cyber attack are restricted. These measures are intended to limit exposure to advanced threats such as surveillance attempts, phishing attacks and account takeovers, which often rely on social engineering or malicious files.
WhatsApp clarified that Strict Account Settings is meant for a relatively small group of users facing rare but high-risk digital threats, rather than for everyday use by the general population. That said, the feature will remain optional and accessible to any user who feels the need for heightened protection.
Users can enable Strict Account Settings by heading to the app’s Settings, selecting Privacy, and then choosing the Advanced option. WhatsApp said the feature will be rolled out globally over the coming weeks.
The launch underlines WhatsApp’s broader security-focused approach, which centres on private, device-based communication that closely mirrors real-world conversations. According to the company, Strict Account Settings is another step towards building layered defences against evolving cyber threats, while continuing to prioritise user privacy.
