WhatsApp beefs up account security with new passwords, caller checks

WhatsApp is introducing new account security features, including stronger two-step verification, more information about calls from unknown numbers and support for multiple passkeys, Meta said.

The company, according to a press statement issued yesterday by Meta, is upgrading two-step verification by allowing users to set a full password instead of a six-digit PIN.

The password can be longer, use letters and numbers, and include special characters, making it harder to guess.

WhatsApp is also giving Android users more information when they receive calls from people who are not in their contacts.

Users can see details such as whether the caller’s number is from another country and whether they share any groups with the caller.

“Scammers rely on urgency — now you can take a beat with some more info before answering,” Meta said.

The company also said more than one billion people have set up a passkey on WhatsApp. Passkeys allow users to log back into their accounts using a fingerprint, Face ID or screen-lock code instead of relying on codes or PINs.

WhatsApp is now allowing users who have both Android and iOS devices to add more than one passkey to their account.

The feature can be accessed through Settings > Account > Passkeys. Meta said it would “keep building tools that help you stay in control of your account and boost account security.”
