Ultra Jhakaas has announced the launch of the ‘Marathi Bhasha Din Stream Fest’, a curated digital celebration of Marathi language, cinema, theatre and contemporary storytelling to commemorate Marathi Bhasha Gaurav Din on February 27.
The initiative brings together an expansive library of more than 4,000 hours of Marathi entertainment across over 1,500 titles, including classic films, theatre productions, originals and television content.
According to a press release from the media company, the festival will run through the last week of February and revisits some of the most loved Marathi films from the late 1990s through the 2000s and 2010s. The curated line-up aims to celebrate stories that continue to resonate across generations while reinforcing the platform’s focus on preserving and promoting regional storytelling in the digital era.
Marathi Bhasha Gaurav Din is celebrated annually to mark the birth anniversary of eminent Marathi poet Vishnu Vaman Shirwadkar, popularly known as Kusumagraj. The day honours the richness of Marathi literature and linguistic heritage, a vision that aligns closely with Ultra Jhakaas’ commitment to amplifying authentic Marathi narratives globally.
The re-release slate features 25 films led by some of Marathi cinema’s most recognised actors, including Vijay Chavan, Dilip Prabhavalkar, Subodh Bhave, Kranti Redkar, Atul Kulkarni, Siddharth Jadhav, Bharat Jadhav and Sonali Kulkarni, along with the late Priya Marathe. The titles span comedy, family drama, thrillers and socially relevant narratives, showcasing the thematic diversity of Marathi cinema.
Several films in the collection hold notable cinematic significance. ‘Kaal Raatri 12 Vajta’ (1999), starring Alka Kubal, is regarded as one of the early psychological thrillers in Marathi cinema, while ‘Ajoba’ (2014), featuring Urmila Matondkar, explores intergenerational relationships. ‘Kaccha Limbu’(2017), led by Sonali Kulkarni, presents a sensitive coming-of-age narrative, and ‘Vitti Dandu’ (2014), starring Dilip Prabhavalkar and Mrunal Thakur, highlights the isolation of rural communities in the pre-independence era. Other titles such as ‘Priyatama’ (2014), ‘Vighnaharta Mahaganpati’ (2015), ‘Sukhant’ (2010), ‘What An Idea Mai’ (2011), ‘Yeda’ (2013) and ‘Gola Berij’ (2012) further reflect the genre diversity and mass appeal of Marathi cinema.
The festival also marks the world digital premiere of ‘Aata Vel Zali’, directed by Ananth Mahadevan and starring Dilip Prabhavalkar and Rohini Hattangadi. The film explores the complex subject of passive euthanasia, addressing themes of dignity, ageing and personal choice. Additionally, the platform will stream ‘Vada Pav’ (2025), a romantic comedy directed by and starring Prasad Oak, which follows an Indian family in London navigating relationships, tradition and modern realities.
Marathi theatre will also be highlighted through a dedicated ‘Rangbhoomi Spotlight’, featuring iconic plays by celebrated theatre personalities such as Machchindra Kambli and Laxmikant Berde. Popular productions including Shrimant Damodar Pant, Yada Kadachit 1 & 2 and Jau Bai Jorat form part of the collection, reflecting the platform’s efforts to preserve stage heritage through digital access.
The Stream Fest will also feature Ultra Jhakaas originals such as ‘Saubhagyawati Sarpanch’, ‘IPC’, ‘Better Half Chi Love Story’, ‘Jilabi’, ‘Raakh’ and ‘Khotachiwadi’, highlighting the platform’s focus on balancing legacy content with contemporary storytelling.
Commenting on the initiative, Sushilkumar Agrawal, Founder and CEO of Ultra Media & Entertainment Group, said the Marathi language lies at the core of cultural identity and the Stream Fest aims to create a digital space for audiences to celebrate timeless classics, theatre and modern originals.
