Micro-blogging platform Twitter on Wednesday announced that it is planning to “expand” the political advertising it allows “in the coming weeks”.
“Today, we’re relaxing our ads policy for cause-based ads in the US,” the platform announced via its Twitter Safety account. We also intend to expand the amount of political advertising we allow in the coming weeks.
“In the future, we will align our advertising policy with that of television and other media outlets. We will first ensure, as with all policy changes, that our approach to reviewing and approving content protects people on Twitter,” the company said, according to a report filed by IANS from San Francisco
“This is a good call at Twitter,” one user said. “Kinda shocking”, another commented, “translation: Advertisers don’t want to advertise on here anymore so we’re just going to let the alt-right advertise whatever”.
Meanwhile, Twitter officially banned all types of political ads from its platform in November 2019, just weeks after former CEO Jack Dorsey announced that the micro-blogging site would no longer allow them.
