Tata Play has launched Tata Play Smart, a smart TV app offering more than 500 live television channels without requiring a satellite dish or set-top box, according to a report in the Mint today.
Priced at Rs. 199 per month for the first language and Rs.99 for each additional language, the service expands the company’s live-TV offering to internet-connected devices.
The launch comes as India’s paid direct-to-home (DTH) industry continues to lose subscribers—- as per latest TRAI data—- prompting operators to explore additional ways of reaching viewers.
According to the Mint report, Tata Play, however, has clarified that the new service is an expansion of its business rather than a move away from satellite television.
Tata Play Smart allows viewers to watch live television over an internet connection, while retaining familiar features such as channel numbers, an electronic programme guide and remote-friendly navigation.
The service is available on compatible smart TVs and can also be accessed through mobile devices, tablets and laptops, extending the offering to consumers who may not have a Tata Play DTH connection.
