One of the most famous props from the ‘Star Wars’ films has been sold for a record price. The original lightsaber used by Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker in ‘Star Wars’: The Empire Strikes Back’ was auctioned for $3.75 million (around Rs.32 crore), making it the most expensive ‘Star Wars’ prop ever sold at an auction.
According to an AP report today from Los Angeles ,the lightsaber was used in one of the most memorable scenes in the film, where Luke Skywalker fights Darth Vader in Cloud City. During the fight, Vader reveals that he is Luke’s father and cuts off Luke’s right hand. The auction also included the prop hand that was used to film this famous scene.
The sale took place at Heritage Auctions’ ‘Hollywood & Entertainment Signature Auction’ in Los Angeles. According to the auction house, this lightsaber had never been sold publicly before, which made it a rare item for collectors and ‘Star Wars’ fans.
Joe Maddalena, Executive Vice President of Heritage Auctions, said the lightsaber is not just a movie prop but a part of cinema history because it was used in one of the most iconic scenes ever filmed.
The auction also featured several other well-known movie collectibles. The Wicked Witch’s hat from ‘The Wizard of Oz’ sold for $550,000, Gene Wilder’s hat from ‘Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory’ sold for $350,000, and Daenerys Targaryen’s dragon egg chest from ‘Game of Thrones’ fetched $312,500. Two rugs used in ‘The Big Lebowski’ were also sold for $350,000 and $375,000.
