Spotify is rolling out a new feature allowing listeners to leave comments on podcast episodes, starting today. This move, inspired by a similar feature on Apple Podcasts, aims to enhance interaction between podcast creators and their audiences.
Podcast creators on Spotify can now enable or disable comments for individual episodes or their entire show. They also have control over which comments are displayed on their episode pages, TOI reported.
Maya Prohovnik, head of podcast features at Spotify, emphasized that the company is taking a cautious approach to ensure the feature is safe and enjoyable for all users.
Spotify already offers interactive features like polls and Q&As, which have been shown to increase listener engagement and retention. The new comment feature will be gradually introduced over the next month, initially available on select podcasts.
This initiative positions Spotify to compete more directly with YouTube, where creators often engage with fans through comment sections. While the comment feature won’t generate immediate revenue for Spotify, it aims to boost user engagement. Prohovnik hinted at potential future monetization options, such as paid badges or special features for dedicated fans.
For now, Spotify is focused on observing how the new comment feature is utilized by both creators and listeners.
