Spotify will start adding an ‘AI Persona’ badge to some artist profiles from mid-September, as part of its efforts to make AI-generated artist identities more transparent to listeners.
According to an announcement from Spotify, the badge will indicate that an artist’s public identity may be AI-generated and does not represent a real person. The label will appear on artist profiles, in search results and alongside tracks in playlists.
The music platform said the move is part of its wider push to improve transparency and trust on the platform as generative AI becomes more common in the music industry.
Spotify said artists can voluntarily disclose that their profile represents an AI Persona through Spotify for Artists. However, the company will not depend only on self-disclosure and will also review profiles and identify accounts whose public identity, including their name and images, appears to represent a photorealistic AI-generated person.
When Spotify itself applies the badge, the artist will be notified and given an opportunity to disclose their AI identity or appeal the decision.
The company also said AI Personas will generally not appear in Spotify’s editorial or algorithmic recommendations. However, users may still receive music from these profiles in recommendations if, for example, they already follow an AI Persona.
Spotify clarified that the new badge is specifically about an artist’s identity, not whether AI was used to make their music.
The company already provides ‘AI Credits’ and ‘SongDNA’ to give listeners information about how music was created and who contributed to it.
