In a compelling new digital offering, Sony LIV has launched ‘Real Heroes’, an original eight-part docuseries that shines a spotlight on India’s unsung freedom fighters and armed forces veterans.
Streaming exclusively on Sony LIV’s YouTube channel, the series is directed by bestselling author and filmmaker Anirban Bhattacharyya and is part of Gen S Life’s mission to preserve and honour the voices of India’s senior citizens, the streamer said in a statement.
‘Real Heroes’ moves beyond historical archives, delving deep into the personal accounts of men and women who shaped the nation’s destiny through sacrifice, resilience and bravery. The series includes first-hand narratives from some of India’s most decorated military veterans, as well as freedom fighters who were part of the Quit India Movement and other pivotal moments in the country’s struggle for independence.
Among the many moving stories is that of Lt. Gen. Sanjay Kulkarni (Retd.), who recalls the unforgiving conditions of Siachen during Operation Meghdoot. “Siachen is not a place you conquer; it is a place that tests your will to survive,” he shares.
Also featured is Col. DPK Pillay (Shaurya Chakra), who gave up his evacuation during Operation Rakshak to save two injured children. “In war, humanity speaks without words, and gratitude never fades,” he reflects.
Dr. G.G. Parikh, a 101-year-old freedom fighter, recounts the underground resistance during British rule, while Col. Jasbir Singh, who was injured in the 1971 Indo-Pak war, speaks of living with honour despite losing a foot to a landmine.
Other notable voices include:
- Brig. Shamsher Singh (AVSM), who faced near-certain death in the Battle of Haji Pir.
- Gour Hari Das, who spent decades trying to prove his identity as a freedom fighter post-Independence.
- Lt. Col. B.T. Pandit (PVSM, VRC), who faced enemy fire atop a tank during the Battle of Basantar.
- Commodore Medioma Bhada, who flew bombing missions during the 1971 war from INS Vikrant.
Meenakshi Menon, founder of Gen S Life, emphasized the emotional and cultural value of the series: “These stories are a powerful reminder that history lives in people. By honouring their voices, we are not only remembering the past but investing in a more grateful future.”
Director Bhattacharyya added, “These are not just stories, they are legacies. This series is our way of saluting the spirit, courage, and integrity of India’s true legends.”
