In a world where women are breaking barriers and redefining success, societal beauty standards continue to cast a long shadow, often determining their perceived worth.
Shemaroo Umang, in collaboration with Story Square Productions, is set to challenge these outdated norms with its latest offering—‘Jamuniya’, a compelling drama that delves into the harsh realities of colour-based discrimination.
The show premieres on March 3, 2025, at 8:00 pm, airing Monday to Saturday, and promises to initiate a much-needed conversation about self-worth, acceptance, and resilience.
At the heart of ‘Jamuniya’ is the story of a young girl judged by her dark complexion rather than her true abilities. Starring Aleya Ghosh in the titular role, alongside Rajat Verma, Bhojpuri superstar Rani Chatterjee, and veteran actress Meena Mir, the show is set in the culturally rich landscape of Uttar Pradesh. The protagonist, Jamuniya, named after the Jamun fruit—dark on the outside but rich and valuable within, embodies strength, intelligence, and determination. Despite facing constant rejection and discrimination, she refuses to be defined by societal beauty standards.
Sandeep Gupta, COO – Broadcasting Business, Shemaroo Entertainment Ltd., emphasized the show’s deeper purpose, stating, “Stories that entertain while addressing important social issues have the power to spark meaningful change. ‘Jamuniya’ is not just a show; it is a movement against deep-rooted prejudices that continue to exist in our society. By bringing colour-based discrimination into the spotlight, we aim to challenge outdated perceptions and inspire confidence in those who have faced similar biases.”
Concept creator Vedraj echoed this sentiment, highlighting the responsibility of storytellers in shaping societal narratives. “Jamuniya reflects the biases that still dictate how people are perceived and treated. Through this show, we hope to spark conversations on self-acceptance and redefine the way beauty is measured. We want audiences to walk away feeling empowered and encouraged to embrace their true worth beyond superficial standards.”
With a gripping storyline, impactful performances, and a socially relevant message, ‘Jamuniya’ aims to redefine perspectives on beauty and self-worth. The show’s tagline, “Rang ke chashme se dekhti hai duniya, kya duniya ka nazariya badal paayegi, Jamuniya?” (The world sees through the lens of colour; can Jamuniya change their perception?), sets the stage for a thought-provoking journey.
