Even as global micro-blogging website Twitter and the Indian government are involved in a slugfest over blocking and then later un-blocking of some accounts related to the ongoing farmers’ protest, Mahima Kaul, Twitter’s public policy director, India and South Asia, is leaving the company to “take some time off”.
On Sunday, as Kaul’s resignation started trending, Twitter insisted that her leaving the company was note connected to the face-off with the Indian government and that she had decided to quit in January itself. She’d, however, continue till March end to assist in a transition.
Twitter’s global Public Policy VP Monique Meche said in a statement, “At the start of this year, Mahima Kaul decided to step down from her role…to take a well-deserved break. It’s a loss for all of us at Twitter, but after more than five years in the role we respect her desire to focus on the most important people and relationships in her personal life.”
Twitter has been accused by the Indian government of violating local laws and rolling back the government’s directives on takedowns of accounts connected to the farmer’s protests.
Kaul, who joined Twitter in 2015, became a mother last year and she’s the second public policy head of a global company to quit her position. Before her, Facebook’s Ankhi Das last year quit amidst controversy.
Kaul came to Twitter after a stint at the New Delhi-based Observor Research Foundation, a policy think-tank.
