The Digital Personal Data Protection Bill, 2023 was introduced in the Lok Sabha yesterday by Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union Minister of Communications and Electronics & Information Technology.
However, the bill’s introduction faced strong opposition from members of the Opposition, who voiced concerns about potential violations of the fundamental right to privacy.
They insisted that the bill should undergo thorough scrutiny by the standing committee before further progress, ANI reported.
The Opposition also pointed out that the government had withdrawn a similar bill on data protection previous year, making it essential to subject the new proposal to more rigorous examination.
In response, Vaishnaw clarified that the Bill is not a money Bill and assured the Opposition that all raised concerns would be addressed during the forthcoming debate.
The primary objective of the Bill is to regulate the processing of digital personal data, striking a balance between safeguarding individuals’ right to protect their personal information and allowing the lawful processing of such data for legitimate purposes.
