OpenAI has released GPT-6 Astra, its latest AI model, with a strong focus on safety, security and better alignment.
According to OpenAI, GPT-6 Astra is the company’s most capable model to date and is the first OpenAI model to reach the ‘Critical’ level for cybersecurity capabilities under its Preparedness Framework.
The company said Astra has stronger protection against harmful cyber activities and is more resistant to jailbreak attempts than its predecessor, GPT-5.6 Sol. OpenAI has also added stricter security measures and monitoring systems.
Astra has also shown improvements in following safety rules and staying within its authorised limits. In a test involving more than 54,000 internal Codex tasks, the model received around half as many higher-severity misalignment flags as GPT-5.6 Sol.
OpenAI said GPT-6 Astra is also safer when browsing the web and working with computer tools. It is less likely to carry out potentially harmful actions such as unauthorised transactions, data loss or bypassing security controls.
However, OpenAI also acknowledged that Astra can sometimes evade monitoring in certain adversarial tests. The company said it is continuing to study this issue and is working on additional ways to monitor and improve the safety of increasingly capable AI models.
