Netflix has shared details about the impact of its series ‘My Brilliant Career’, which was filmed in and around Adelaide, South Australia.
According to a Netflix press release today, the production added around AU$19 million to South Australia’s economy. It also provided work for about 600 local cast members, crew and extras, and worked with around 410 local businesses.
The series follows Sybylla Melvyn, a young woman who wants to make her own decisions and live life her way. The story is inspired by Miles Franklin’s 1901 novel.
The show was filmed at different locations across South Australia. Netflix said the production also helped highlight local heritage sites, including the historic Para Para house in Gawler. Yallum Park Homestead in Penola was also shown on screen for the first time.
The production also took steps to reduce waste and protect the environment. Renewable energy was used at studios and offices during the day, while post-production was powered completely by renewable electricity. Around 85 percent of the vehicles used on set were hybrid.
The team used reusable cups, shared leftover food with crew members and donated props, costumes and fabric materials to schools and childcare centres. It also donated 300 litres of paint to Habitat for Humanity.
Netflix said the series also supported First Nations talent. Six First Nations writers helped develop the characters and storylines from the early stages of the project.
Three creatives also received new opportunities during the production. Shari Sebbens received her first Associate Producer credit, Hannah Belanszky her first broadcast TV Additional Writer credit, and Skye Leon her first Contributing Writer role.
‘My Brilliant Career’ debuted at No. 4 on Netflix’s Global Top 10 English TV list with 3.1 million views. The series is now streaming on Netflix.
