Netflix India marks 10 years; Shergill reflects on storytelling journey

Netflix has completed a decade of its presence in India, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of the country’s streaming and storytelling landscape. To commemorate the occasion, Monika Shergill, Vice President – Content, Netflix India, reflected on the platform’s journey and its commitment to Indian stories, creators and audiences.

In a LinkedIn post, Shergill shared that when she joined Netflix nearly seven years ago, the ambition was “simple but bold” — to tell Indian stories with honesty and conviction, with the belief that staying rooted would allow them to find love both at home and globally. She noted that over the years, this belief has only grown stronger as Indian narratives have resonated widely and sparked conversations beyond borders.

Calling it a privilege, Shergill highlighted her experience of working closely with creators, talent, technicians and colleagues who consistently push boundaries and shape stories that reflect the India of today — complex, diverse and ever-evolving. She said the journey has been driven by creativity, curiosity and courage, from compelling narratives to shows and films that have travelled globally while remaining deeply Indian in spirit.

She also spoke about the responsibility that comes with storytelling, adding that every day brings a sense of joy and pride in showing up for audiences who are both Netflix’s biggest fans and its toughest critics. According to Shergill, this constant engagement with viewers has been central to shaping Netflix India’s creative direction over the years.

Marking the milestone, Shergill said she was honoured to share the Fortune India cover with Bela Bajaria, describing her as a visionary leader, and expressed gratitude for Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos’s continued support and passion for Indian stories. Together, she said, the leadership has worked towards making Netflix a home for stories that entertain, include and inspire.

As Netflix India enters its next decade, Shergill summed up the platform’s vision succinctly: Indian storytelling that remains rooted at home while resonating everywhere, signalling a continued focus on local authenticity with global reach.
