Netflix is expanding its young adult (YA) entertainment slate with new scripted series, returning favourites, films and a new YA title collection, as the streaming platform says the genre has evolved into a multigenerational proposition.

YA series and films have generated more than 10.5 billion global views on Netflix since 2023, while YA titles have appeared in Netflix’s Global Top 10 more than 90 percent of the time so far this year.

Netflix late last week announced two new scripted series, ‘Sid & Zoey’ and ‘Sunshine Girls’, as part of what it describes as its biggest YA slate yet.

‘Sid & Zoey’ is a genre-bending series combining supernatural mystery and romance. Created by writers and showrunners Jon Kasdan and John Shiban, the series is executive produced by Blumhouse Atomic Monster and Bad Robot.

‘Sunshine Girls’ follows Olivia as she makes a fresh start in the suburbs of Valley Hills, California, after moving from New York. Created by Rob Fishman and Nuria Anson, the series stars Alma Marian, Isabella Fowler and Erin Rose Park and will debut exclusively on Netflix in December.

Netflix also announced new details for ‘Minimum Wage’, which follows teenagers juggling part-time jobs and love triangles on their way to graduation.

Randall Park is joining the cast, while the first 14 episodes will debut this year exclusively on Netflix.

‘Finding Her Edge’ is also returning for a second season, with production beginning later this month. Madelyn Keys, Cale Ambrozic and Olly Atkins will reprise their roles, with the new season promising new twists and turns on and off the ice.

The wider upcoming YA slate includes returning shows ‘Outer Banks’ and ‘Ginny & Georgia’, alongside new series ‘Crew Girl’‘A Different World’‘The Body’‘Poser’ and ‘The Sticks’. On the film side, Netflix has announced ‘Don’t Say Good Luck’ and ‘Best of the Best’.

The platform also highlighted developments across its slate.

‘The Sticks’ revealed its title, ‘Outer Banks’ released new character posters and a franchise trailer, ‘A Different World’ announced Brandy as its theme-song performer, ‘Crew Girl’released a new trailer, and ‘The Body’ announced a November 11 premiere date with a first look.

Meanwhile, ‘Don’t Say Good Luck’, directed by Julia Hart and starring Sunny Sandler, Melanie Lynskey and Max Greenfield, began streaming on Netflix.

The coming-of-age dramedy follows Sophie Birenbaum, who is preparing to lead her high school musical when drama at home threatens to overshadow what is happening on stage.

Netflix is positioning the expanded slate against strong evidence of YA’s reach beyond younger audiences. More than 20 different YA titles have entered the platform’s Global Top 10 this year, with the company describing them as shared, multigenerational viewing rather than niche teen hits.

Since 2022, YA titles have accounted for 30 percent of Netflix’s most talked-about titles each year on social media, the streamer said.

The company said its YA stories have also generated cultural impact beyond viewing. ‘Finding Her Edge’ sparked a 1,300 percent increase in global searches for its audiobook on Spotify, while ‘To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before’‘One Day’ and ‘Outer Banks’ have each been associated with consumer or cultural trends.

Netflix also said its YA titles have helped create global stars including Millie Bobby Brown (‘Enola Holmes’ series), Noah Centineo and Madelyn Cline, with some actors seeing social followings rise by as much as 3,000 percent following the release of their shows and films.

Alongside the new announcements, Netflix has launched an all-new YA collection, bringing together films including ‘To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before’‘The Kissing Booth’ and ‘You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah’, and shows including ‘Never Have I Ever’‘My Life With the Walter Boys’ and ‘XO, Kitty’.

The collection also offers title commentary, behind-the-scenes clips, bloopers and other additional content.
