The News Broadcasters Federation has applauded the Monday’s Delhi High Court order directing about 15 multi-system operators to restore the transmission of TV9 Telugu, Saakshi TV, 10TV, and NTV news channel, among others, which had been taken off-air from June 6 in Andhra Pradesh.
This landmark ruling addresses the unilateral and illegal blackout of these channels, reinforcing the essential principles of freedom of speech and expression, fundamental to our democratic society.
According to press release, the blackout, which coincided with the day of election results, raised significant concerns about press freedom. Reports suggested that political pressure was exerted on cable operators to remove these channels due to a shift in political leadership in Andhra Pradesh. With Andhra Pradesh being the largest market for television consumers in India, the blackout impacted over 62 lakh set-top boxes, denying millions their right to information.
The Delhi High Court’s intervention emphasizes the need for an open and transparent media environment, crucial for the health of democracy. The court’s order mandates the immediate restoration of the affected news channels, ensuring that the people of Andhra Pradesh can once again access a broad range of news and viewpoints.
During the court proceedings, TV9 argued that the disconnection was illegal and violated the interconnection agreement with distribution companies, as per the regulations of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).
NBF supports the High Court’s decision and urges all relevant authorities to comply with the directive promptly. This ruling is expected to set a precedent for upholding press freedom and protecting journalists’ rights across India.
“We commend the Delhi High Court for its steadfast commitment to safeguarding constitutional rights and promoting a free and independent media,” stated the NBF. “This decision is a victory for democracy and a reminder of the vital role that judicial oversight plays in preserving our fundamental freedoms.”
The News Broadcasters Federation remains dedicated to advocating for the rights of journalists and the free flow of information. NBF calls on the government and regulatory bodies to take proactive measures to prevent such blackouts in the future and to ensure that media channels can operate without undue interference.
