The makers of director Jeethu Joseph’s much-anticipated Malayalam film ‘Drishyam 3’, starring Mohanlal in the lead, have announced that the film will release worldwide on April 2, 2026. The third instalment of the hugely successful franchise is expected to continue the legacy of suspense-driven storytelling that has made ‘Drishyam’ one of Indian cinema’s most celebrated series.
According to an IANS report, the release date was officially announced by Aashirvad Cinemas, the production house backing the film. The banner took to its X timeline to share the update, posting, “Years passed. The past didn’t. #Drishyam3 | Worldwide Release | April 2, 2026,” instantly generating excitement among fans of the franchise.
Mohanlal had completed shooting his portions for the film in December last year. At the time, a video of the actor cutting a cake with the entire unit to mark the completion of his shoot went viral on social media, reflecting the buzz surrounding the project. Notably, Mohanlal had begun work on Drishyam 3 on the eve of receiving Indian cinema’s highest honour, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, adding further significance to the film.
The third part of the franchise was formally launched with a traditional puja ceremony held at a law college near Kochi in September last year. Speaking to the media ahead of the launch, director Jeethu Joseph had shared that the new film would explore the next phase in the life of Georgekutty, the iconic character portrayed by Mohanlal. “The film focuses on what happens in Georgekutty’s life after four-and-a-half years. That is the crux of the story,” Joseph had said.
Producer Antony Perumbavoor, a long-time collaborator of Mohanlal and the driving force behind the Drishyam series, had earlier explained that the decision to proceed with the third instalment was taken after extensive discussions. He noted that the overwhelming response to the first two films made it clear that Georgekutty’s story was far from over. “Only after detailed talks with Jeethu did we finalize this new version,” Perumbavoor had stated.
The film was shot across multiple locations, including Thodupuzha and Vagamon, with the final five-day schedule completed in Ernakulam. The ‘Drishyam’ films have achieved cult status for their tightly woven narratives, layered suspense and Mohanlal’s widely acclaimed performance. The original film, released in 2013, set new benchmarks in Malayalam cinema, while ‘Drishyam 2’, released in 2021, recorded massive viewership both in theatres and on streaming platforms, raising expectations even higher for the upcoming chapter.
