Instagram has introduced a new feature that subtly changes the way photo posts are experienced on the platform.
Users can now add background music to carousel posts, allowing a set of images shared in a single post to be accompanied by audio when opened or swiped through. The update adds a more immersive layer to photo sharing, without pushing users towards video-heavy formats such as Reels.
The feature has been rolled out quietly and was detailed in a recent Instagram blogpost, which noted that the aim is to enhance static photo posts in a feed increasingly dominated by sound and motion. By allowing music to be paired with image carousels, Instagram is offering creators and everyday users a new way to add mood and context to their posts while keeping the focus on photography.
Carousel posts remain one of Instagram’s most popular formats, especially for users who prefer to tell a story across multiple images rather than compress everything into a single frame. Until now, these posts were entirely visual. With the addition of background music, carousel posts gain a richer presence in the feed, helping them stand out alongside videos and animated content.
