India Today Group’s Executive Editor and senior Defence Correspondent Manjeet Negi has been awarded the prestigious Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Commendation Medal by General Anil Chauhan for his contribution to defence journalism and national-interest reporting.
The honour makes Manjeet Negi the only journalist in the country to receive the CDS Commendation Medal, underlining his long-standing work in covering defence, military operations and national security matters over the years.
The recognition was conferred by CDS General Anil Chauhan ahead of his retirement on May 30. During the ceremony, several officers and soldiers from the Indian armed forces were honoured for their distinguished service. Alongside military personnel, a few individuals from different fields were also recognised for their contribution in their respective domains, with Negi being among those selected.
With more than 25 years in journalism, Manjeet Negi has built a strong reputation for reporting on defence affairs, strategic developments and national security issues. Over the years, he has reported from some of the country’s most difficult and sensitive locations, including Siachen, often referred to as the world’s highest battlefield, as well as from submarines and conflict-prone border regions.
His reporting has covered several major developments, including India-China military tensions in Ladakh, disaster-hit areas, strategic military operations and frontline conflict zones. Known for his on-ground presence during crucial national events, Negi has consistently delivered detailed reportage from areas that remain difficult to access.
This is not the first major recognition for the senior journalist. In 2025, he was also honoured with the Chief of the Air Staff Commendation Medal for his contribution to defence reporting.
Reacting to the honour, Manjeet Negi expressed gratitude towards General Anil Chauhan, his family, colleagues and the India Today Group. “Today is a very important day in my life. In my 25-year journalistic career, I have received the Chief of Defence Staff Commendation Medal as a Defence Correspondent. I express my heartfelt gratitude to CDS Gen Anil Chauhan ji. I also owe the blessings of my parents, family, my organisation the India Today Group, and all my friends who supported me every step of the way,” he said.
The recognition further highlights the growing importance of defence journalism in India and the role of field reporting in bringing critical national security developments closer to the public.
