The semi-final clash between India national cricket team and England national cricket team in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 has set a new global benchmark for digital sports viewership, with record-breaking numbers on JioHotstar. The high-stakes match played on March 5 registered an unprecedented 65.2 million peak concurrent viewers on the streaming platform, marking the highest concurrency ever recorded for a live event on any digital platform worldwide.
According to a JioHotstar press release, the semi-final also generated 619 million views on JioHotstar, making it the most streamed T20 International match in history. The massive viewership underscores the scale of fan engagement around the tournament and highlights the growing dominance of digital platforms in sports broadcasting.
The thrilling encounter, which produced a combined total of 499 runs across both innings, kept fans glued to their screens across India and other regions. The peak concurrency figure surpassed the previous global record of 65 million viewers set by an international streaming platform in November 2024. Unlike that record, which was achieved through aggregated audiences across multiple markets, JioHotstar’s milestone was driven entirely by viewers within a single market.
Industry observers say the numbers underline the rapid evolution of live sports streaming in India and the increasing ability of platforms to manage massive traffic surges during marquee events. The achievement also reflects the powerful draw of the Indian cricket team, particularly during a high-pressure knockout fixture in a global tournament.
Across both television and digital platforms, the semi-final recorded a combined reach of more than 320 million viewers. Total watch-time across screens crossed an extraordinary 23 billion minutes, making it the most-watched T20 International match ever.
Commenting on the milestone, Jay Shah, Chairman of the International Cricket Council, said it was heartening to see hundreds of millions of cricket fans in India come together for the tournament. He noted that the impressive viewership figures highlight both the passion of cricket followers and the growing accessibility of the sport for audiences around the world.
Uday Shankar, Vice-Chairman of JioStar, said the milestone reflected the company’s technological capability as well as the ICC’s efforts to expand the reach of cricket globally. He added that when hundreds of millions of viewers tune in simultaneously, delivering a seamless viewing experience requires the best in technology and infrastructure.
The 619 million views recorded during the semi-final also surpassed the previous record of 533 million views set during the final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, further cementing the 2026 tournament’s impact across digital platforms.
With the championship match still to be played, the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 has already established several new benchmarks for reach and engagement across both broadcast and streaming platforms. The tournament will conclude with the final between India national cricket team and New Zealand national cricket team on March 8 at the Narendra Modi Stadium, with the match set to be broadcast on the Star Sports Network and streamed live on JioHotstar.
