The Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE) has officially re-elected Sunil, former Additional Director General of Prasar Bharati, as its President for the second consecutive term for the year 2025-26. The announcement was made following the declaration of election results earlier today.
This press release from IETE highlights Sunil’s remarkable contributions to India’s broadcasting and telecommunications sector, and the trust placed in him to continue guiding the Institution’s mission of technological excellence. Having already served as President and as a long-standing member of the IETE Governing Council, Sunil returns to lead the organization with a vision for continuity, innovation, and expanded outreach.
With over 35 years of service in broadcasting, Sunil has played a transformative role in shaping the Indian media landscape. His leadership at All India Radio and Doordarshan covered diverse and strategic domains including Technology, Global Outreach, Marketing, Distribution, Central Archives, and External Services. One of his landmark achievements includes spearheading India’s first Direct-to-Home (DTH) platform, along with the integration of private broadcasters through transparent auctions — a feat that led to the DD Freedish platform reaching a record 58 million homes.
Sunil’s work has received widespread acclaim, both nationally and internationally. He was conferred the IETE S N Mitra Memorial Award in 2016 for his contributions to radio broadcast science and technology. In 2018, he was awarded the Broadcast Excellence Award by the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU), the largest broadcasting union in the world.
He currently serves as the President of the Broadcast Engineering Society of India (BES) and has held esteemed global positions such as Vice Chairman of ABU’s Technical Bureau (Malaysia), Vice President of ABU, and juror for The Association of International Broadcasters (UK) and ABU. These roles have firmly positioned him as a global thought leader in broadcast engineering.
Founded in 1953 and inaugurated by Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, IETE is recognized as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (SIRO) by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India. With a robust member base of over 1.4 lakh professionals across India and overseas, IETE continues to serve as a key institution driving scientific research, education, and innovation in electronics and telecommunication engineering.
The Institution is governed by an elected Governing Council, with the President at the helm, and is supported by a network of committees dedicated to focused areas of research and knowledge development. IETE operates 63 centres across India along with overseas centres in Kathmandu (Nepal) and Perth (Australia), all managed by elected Executive Committees.
As Sunil embarks on his renewed term as President, he brings with him a deep reservoir of experience, visionary leadership, and an unwavering commitment to driving IETE’s impact across scientific, educational, and industry landscapes.
