The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has directed the Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) to immediately suspend the reporting of Television Rating Points (TRPs) for news television channels for a period of four weeks. The directive, issued on March 6, comes amid concerns over the nature of coverage being aired by some broadcasters.
According to The Economic Times, the ministry said it had observed that certain news channels were displaying “unwarranted sensationalism and speculative content” while reporting on the ongoing tensions between Israel and Iran. The ministry noted that such coverage could potentially create panic among viewers, particularly among those who have friends or family in regions affected by the conflict.
In its order, the ministry stated that BARC functions as a television rating agency registered under the Policy Guidelines for Television Rating Agencies in India dated January 16, 2014. These guidelines outline the regulatory framework within which rating agencies operate, including their obligation to follow directives issued by the government.
Referring specifically to Clause 24.2 of the policy, the ministry said rating agencies are required to comply with orders, regulations and directions issued by the government from time to time. Invoking this provision, the ministry instructed BARC to withhold the publication of TRP data for news television channels with immediate effect.
The suspension of ratings will remain in force for four weeks or until further directions are issued by the ministry, whichever comes earlier. The move effectively pauses the weekly viewership measurement system that plays a key role in determining the popularity and advertising value of television news channels.
Industry observers say the temporary halt in TRP reporting is expected to impact the competitive landscape among news broadcasters, as ratings often influence advertising revenue and programming strategies. The ministry, however, has maintained that the step is aimed at ensuring responsible coverage and preventing unnecessary alarm among the public during a sensitive international situation.
