Veteran journalist Gaurav Sawant is stepping into the spotlight with India Today TV’s new prime-time show ‘India First’ at 8pm, starting today. With his vast experience and frontline reporting credentials, Sawant will take over the prime slot that was earlier home to Newstrack.
According to a press note shared by India Today TV, this move marks a significant moment in the channel’s tradition of nurturing its own leaders from within. Known for its vibrant and democratic newsroom culture, India Today continues to trust and empower journalists who have proven their mettle over the years.
Gaurav Sawant brings with him over three decades of distinguished reporting, having covered some of India’s most critical moments — from the Kargil War and Kandahar hijack to the 26/11 Mumbai attacks and the Pulwama terror strike. His fearless reporting has extended beyond India’s borders to conflict zones in Iraq, Libya, Lebanon, Egypt, Ukraine, and Israel. He was also the first journalist to report live from Daulat Beg Oldie during the Galwan standoff, capturing the intensity of high-altitude conflict under extreme conditions.
Beyond his field reporting, Sawant has been honoured by the Indian Navy with Para Wings after completing five para jumps, including an assisted free fall from a Sea King helicopter. His total of eight para jumps stands as a testament to his hands-on, immersive style of journalism. As an author, his acclaimed work ‘Dateline Kargil’ provided a rare nine-week account of the Kargil conflict, while his Veergatha series on Param Vir Chakra awardees highlighted his dedication to honouring India’s bravest without accepting any government remuneration.
