Actor Emraan Hashmi says he is acutely aware of the enduring love and almost cult-like following that his 2007 film ‘Awarapan’ continues to enjoy, which is why the team behind its sequel has been extremely careful about getting it right.
According to the actor, the emotional connect fans have with the original film has made the responsibility of delivering a worthy follow-up even greater.
The 2007 action-romance drama, directed by Mohit Suri, not only received positive critical response upon release but went on to gain cult status over the years. Many fans still consider it among Hashmi’s finest performances, with its music and brooding narrative continuing to resonate strongly even today. Speaking about the sequel, Hashmi acknowledged the “crazy fandom” surrounding ‘Awarapan’ and said the makers are particular about ensuring that ‘Awarapan 2’ lives up to the expectations associated with the original. The actor made these remarks in a PTI report.
‘Awarapan 2’ will be directed by Nitin Kakkar and written by Bilal Siddiqui, who has also written Aryan Khan’s upcoming series ‘The Ba*ds of Bollywood’. Siddiqui was also behind the much-talked-about cameo by Hashmi as an intimacy coach in the same project, which had generated considerable buzz.
Hashmi said that sequels often come with heightened scrutiny, especially when the original has achieved cult status over time rather than being an immediate blockbuster. He added that the team has taken time to develop the story and characters carefully, keeping in mind what Awarapan meant to audiences and why it continues to be remembered fondly.
While details about the plot and timeline of ‘Awarapan 2’ remain under wraps, the announcement itself has reignited excitement among fans who have long demanded a continuation of the story. With a new creative team at the helm and Hashmi returning to a universe that holds a special place in his filmography, expectations around the sequel are already running high.
