Actor Dhanush is all set to bring to life one of India’s most beloved figures, Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, in an upcoming biopic announced at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival 2025. The official confirmation came from the makers, who revealed that the film is already in production, with acclaimed director Om Raut helming the ambitious project.
According to an ANI report, the film will trace the life and legacy of Dr Kalam, India’s 11th President and renowned missile scientist, fondly remembered as the ‘Missile Man of India’. Raut, best known for directing the historical blockbuster ‘Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior’, described the project as the most significant artistic journey of his life.
“In an era starved of true statesmen, Kalam stood above politics and pettiness. He was a man known for the power of education, excellence and indigenous innovation,” Raut said in an official statement. “To bring his story to the screen is an artistic challenge and a moral and cultural responsibility. It’s a story that’s inspirational for global youth and especially the youth of the Global South. His life is a lesson that is bound to connect with people no matter who they are and where they come from.”
The screenplay has been written by Saiwyn Quadras, whose past works include powerful biographical dramas such as ‘Neerja’, ‘Maidaan’, and ‘Parmanu: The Story of Pokhran’. The makers added that the film would not merely be a political biography but a deeper exploration of Kalam as a visionary leader, poet, scientist, teacher and dreamer — a man whose words and ideas seamlessly blended science with spirituality.
In a press release, the producers shared that the film “will stay true to the values of Dr Kalam” and will explore “the man behind the missile programs and the presidency,” promising an inspiring cinematic experience rooted in leadership, nation-building, and human values.
Producer Abhishek Agarwal expressed his pride in taking on the biopic. “We are excited to bring the epic life of Dr APJ Abdul Kalam to the big screen. This is an emotional moment for us,” he said. Co-producer Bhushan Kumar added, “Dr APJ Abdul Kalam’s life is a story that continues to inspire millions across generations. This is more than just a film; it’s a tribute to a man who showed us how dreams, dedication, and humility can shape a nation’s future.”
While the cast beyond Dhanush is yet to be announced, the film already has significant buzz, owing to its subject and cinematic scale. The project is being jointly backed by Abhishek Agarwal, Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar, and Anil Sunkara.
Further details including the title and release date remain under wraps, but with such an iconic figure at its core and a powerhouse team leading it, this biopic is already being hailed as one of the most anticipated films of the coming year.
