Prasar Bharati’s free-to-air DTH platform DD Free Dish continues to anchor the broadcaster’s financial performance, generating Rs.1,060.71 crore in revenue for the financial year 2024–25 while expanding its reach to nearly 49 million households across India.
According to Prasar Bharati’s latest annual report, the platform remains a key revenue driver despite a marginal 1.54 percent dip from the previous year’s Rs.1,077.27 crore. The report highlights how DD Free Dish has steadily evolved from a public service utility into a major commercial engine for the public broadcaster, backed by a unique and sustainable business model.
Unlike traditional pay-TV platforms, DD Free Dish operates on a zero-cost model for viewers, generating revenue through competitive auctions of channel slots, carriage fees paid by private broadcasters, and advertising-linked income streams. This B2B-led approach has enabled the platform to maintain financial stability while significantly scaling its distribution footprint across the country.
The platform’s ecosystem has also expanded considerably, now offering a wide bouquet of 381 television channels. This includes Doordarshan’s network, leading private entertainment and news channels, as well as a growing number of educational services. In addition, DD Free Dish distributes 48 radio channels, further strengthening its position as a multi-platform content delivery system.
Operationally, Prasar Bharati has been focusing on improving spectrum efficiency and expanding capacity. The platform recently added 60 new channel slots by transitioning to advanced MPEG-4 and DVB-S2 technologies. However, it continues to operate in a hybrid mode, retaining MPEG-2 systems to support legacy set-top boxes while gradually upgrading infrastructure.
In an environment where subscription-driven cable and OTT platforms dominate urban markets, DD Free Dish’s free access model continues to resonate strongly in rural and price-sensitive segments. Its ability to deliver diverse content at no cost has ensured sustained relevance, making it a critical pillar in India’s broadcast distribution landscape even amid slight revenue fluctuations.
