CNN has announced a strategic, multi-year partnership with Google to explore how generative artificial intelligence (AI) can help audiences discover and engage with its journalism.
Under the agreement, CNN will provide enhanced content rights to support experimental features in Google products. The partnership aims to explore new ways of using generative AI to connect audiences with CNN’s journalism while ensuring the appropriate compensation for the use of its content.
According to a press release, the agreement is part of CNN’s broader AI strategy, which focuses on protecting its intellectual property while exploring the opportunities offered by emerging technologies.
“With this partnership we’re unlocking new pathways for audiences to access CNN’s unparalleled journalism while being compensated for the delivery and use of our unique intellectual property in connection with AI products,” said Sam Felix, Senior Vice President, Strategic Partnerships and Business Development at CNN.
Felix added that Google’s work in generative AI has changed how people discover information and content, and the partnership will help CNN explore new ways to reach and engage audiences.
CNN said it is actively embracing the opportunities created by AI and has established multiple commercial partnerships, alongside ongoing discussions with other responsible industry players. The latest agreement reflects the news organisation’s approach to exploring AI-driven audience engagement while safeguarding its journalism and intellectual property.
