A big-screen adaptation of the globally popular video game franchise ‘Call of Duty’ is officially on the way, with Paramount Pictures announcing a June 30, 2028 theatrical release at CinemaCon 2026 in Las Vegas. The long-anticipated project marks another major step in Hollywood’s growing interest in adapting gaming IP into large-scale cinematic experiences.
According to an ANI report, the film will be directed by Pete Berg, with a script penned by Taylor Sheridan. Speaking during the event, Berg highlighted the team’s focus on authenticity, particularly in portraying the lives and experiences of special operations forces. He noted that the film aims to balance human storytelling with large-scale action, staying true to the spirit of the franchise.
While plot details and casting remain under wraps, expectations are already high given the scale and legacy of the source material. The ‘Call of Duty’ franchise, backed by Activision, is among the most successful video game series globally, with over a billion players and lifetime revenues exceeding $35 billion. Since its debut in 2003, the franchise has released more than 30 mainline titles, shaping the modern first-person shooter genre.
The adaptation also fits into a broader trend of video games making a strong transition to film and streaming. Paramount has previously found success with titles like ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’, while recent global hits such as ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ and ‘A Minecraft Movie’ have further demonstrated the box office potential of gaming-based storytelling.
Industry reports suggest that the current deal is focused on developing a single film initially, but there is potential to expand the ‘Call of Duty’ universe across film and television in the future. With a 2028 release date now locked, the project is expected to be one of the most closely watched game-to-film adaptations in the coming years.
