The Asia Video Industry Association (AVIA) recently hosted a successful ‘Indonesia in View’ conference in Jakarta on August 31, attracting over 200 delegates.
The event, according to a media statement from AVIA, featured industry leaders discussing the state of the TV and video market in Indonesia, a country where total video industry revenues are expected to increase from $2.5 billion in 2023 to $3.7 billion by 2028, according to research by Media Partners Asia (MPA).
Key takeaways from the conference include the following:
Optimism in the Market: Tizar Patria from Netflix expressed optimism about the Indonesian market, emphasizing the importance of tailoring content for the local audience and ensuring a quality viewing experience.
Building a Strong Ecosystem: Clarissa Tanoesoedibjo, Managing Director of Vision+, highlighted the need for a robust ecosystem that encompasses pay TV, free-to-air, and streaming. Strategic partnerships within the market are seen as crucial.
Focus on Original Content: With intense competition in Indonesia’s video content market, there’s a growing need for original intellectual property (IP) and stories. Creating a pipeline of talent is vital for scaling content production.
Combatting Piracy: Despite the industry’s growth, piracy remains a significant issue in Indonesia. A recent survey by AVIA’s Coalition Against Piracy revealed that 54% of consumers in Indonesia access pirated services. Efforts are being made to combat online piracy through collaborations, including a memorandum of understanding signed between CAP and the Video Streaming Association of Indonesia.
Monetization Strategies: Monetizing premium video content was a key topic. Programmatic advertising is expected to play a larger role, and FAST (Free Ad-Supported Television) platforms are seen as a way to re-engage viewers who have left the pay-TV ecosystem.
Future Ambitions: Hary Tanoesoedibjo, Executive Chairman of MNC Group, outlined plans to transform his company into a content and entertainment powerhouse. This includes merging RCTI+ and Vision+into a super app, offering both free-to-air content monetized through advertising and premium subscription services.
The goal is to expand this ecosystem across Asia by investing in high-quality content.
Additionally, there were discussions about the potential sale of MNC Play, with plans to sell the data infrastructure portion while retaining the IPTV business.
