Amazon’s satellite internet project Amazon Leo has partnered with South Africa’s largest fixed internet provider Herotel to launch a new satellite broadband service called ‘evry’.

According to an Amazon press release, the service is expected to become commercially available for homes and small businesses in South Africa in 2027.

Through this partnership, Herotel will use Amazon Leo’s satellite technology to provide reliable internet connectivity to areas where traditional fibre and wireless networks are difficult to deploy.

The initiative aims to improve internet access for people living in rural communities, small towns and remote locations.

Amazon Leo uses low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites, which operate closer to Earth compared to traditional satellites. This technology is designed to support faster and more reliable internet services for activities such as video calls, online learning, streaming and remote work.

The launch of evry marks Amazon Leo’s first major satellite internet partnership in Africa. Herotel will manage customer services, installations and local operations for the new service.
