The Malayalam sports comedy ‘Alappuzha Gymkhana’, which charmed audiences in theatres, is all set to punch its way into homes as it makes its digital debut on Sony LIV this June 13. A playful yet inspiring blend of sports, comedy, and youthful drama, the film promises a light-hearted yet impactful viewing experience.
Directed by Khalid Rahman, ‘Alappuzha Gymkhana’ stars Naslen K. Gafoor in the lead as Jojo Johnson, a laidback college-goer who stumbles into boxing not for glory, but as a crafty shortcut via the sports quota. However, what begins as a comical misadventure soon transforms into a transformative journey of discipline, camaraderie, and emotional resilience thanks in large part to their no-nonsense coach Antony Joshua, played by Lukman Avaran.
With a plot that balances genuine emotion with rib-tickling humour, the film has already resonated with a young theatre-going crowd and now aims to reach wider audiences on OTT. According to the official press release, this Sony LIV debut marks a significant second innings for the film, offering viewers across the country a chance to root for this underdog team.
Reflecting on his character, Naslen said, “Playing Jojo Johnson in ‘Alappuzha Gymkhana’ was an exhilarating experience. I got to tap into my own vulnerabilities and strengths to bring this character to life. I’m so grateful to be a part of this project and hope it connects with audiences across the country through its OTT release on Sony LIV.”
Backed by a strong ensemble cast that includes Ganapathi S. Poduval, Sandeep Pradeep, Anagha Ravi, Franco Francis, Baby Jean and Shiva Hariharan, the film balances chaos and charm with equal flair. The chemistry between the group of misfit boxers and their relentless coach forms the emotional and comedic core of the film, giving it a heartwarming underdog story vibe.
Produced by Khalid Rahman along with Jobin George, Sameer Karat and Subeesh Kannanchery, the film is yet another entry into the growing list of Malayalam films making successful OTT transitions.
