Netflix looks to tap South Indian market; greenlights 6 shows

Airtel, Atria Convergence Technologies, Jio Giga Fiber and Tata Play Fiber topped the ISP speed index of Netflix for the India region in the month of April.

Each of the companies delivering broadband service recorded a speed of 3.4 Mbps. Interestingly, Tata Play Fiber is the only company that’s part of a DTH company.

The 10 companies that occupied the No. 2 slot in the India region, with each delivering speed of 3.2 Mbps, included 7 Star Digital, Alliance Broadband, D-VoiS, Excitel Broadband, GTPL, Hathway, One Broadband, SPECTRA, Syscon Infoway and YOU Broadband

The two government-controlled telcos — MTNL and BSNL — fell in category three and four, respectively with speeds of 3 and 2.6 Mbps.

The Netflix ISP Speed Index is a measure of primetime Netflix performance on a particular ISP and not a measure of overall performance for other services/data that may travel across the specific ISP network.

Faster Netflix performance generally means better picture quality, quicker start times and fewer interruptions.

Meanwhile, elsewhere in the world, two ISP services in Honduras posted increases in the month of April on the speed index, a monthly update on which ISPs provide the best primetime Netflix streaming experience.

TEVISAT and Metronet in Honduras climbed by 0.2 Megabits per second (Mbps) to 2.2 and 2.8 Mbps, respectively. Elsewhere in Latin America, Venezuela’s Meganet also saw an improvement of 0.2 Mbps, rising from 2.6 to 2.8 Mbps, according to data put out by Netflix.

One ISP in Europe saw April’s biggest gain. Austria’s A1 jumped by 0.4 Mbps to 3.2 Mbps, an improvement from last month’s 2.8 Mbps.

Despite strong gains by two Honduran ISPs, the country’s average fell by 0.2 Mbps to 2.8 Mbps. Other territories — including Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, France, and India  — also saw their averages decrease by 0.2 Mbps.

The highest performing ISPs in April moved from 3.6 Mbps to 3.4 Mbps, because the average bitrates needed to achieve the same primetime Netflix performance had decreased.

Twenty-seven countries reached the top performance group this month, up from 21 in March 2022. Canada, Finland, Iceland, Ireland, New Zealand, and Norway are the new entries for April’s top performance group.

They are joined by last month’s top performance group, which include Australia, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Hungary, Hong Kong, Israel, Luxembourg, Malaysia, the Netherlands, Panama, Portugal, Romania, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, the UK, and the US.
