Bollywood’s much-loved actor-director duo Aamir Khan and Rajkumar Hirani are reuniting after over a decade for a powerful cinematic journey — a biopic on the life of Dadasaheb Phalke, the revered pioneer and father of Indian cinema.
The film, set against the stirring backdrop of India’s independence struggle, is expected to chronicle Phalke’s extraordinary path in shaping the foundation of the country’s film industry.
According to an ANI report, the upcoming project marks their first collaboration since the blockbuster PK in 2014 and the cult classic 3 Idiots in 2009. Film trade analyst Taran Adarsh broke the news on X, stating that the highly anticipated biopic has been in development for four years and will go on floors in October 2025. “Aamir Khan and director Rajkumar Hirani are joining forces once again, this time for a biopic on Dadasaheb Phalke… With a script that has been in the works for four years, Aamir Khan is set to begin prep soon after the release of Sitaare Zameen Par,” he wrote.
The project is being described as a tribute to one of the greatest visionaries in Indian cinema. Phalke, who made India’s first full-length feature film Raja Harishchandra in 1913, is widely credited for laying the foundation of an industry that has today become one of the largest in the world. The makers are aiming to do justice to the magnitude of his legacy by recreating the bygone era through cutting-edge visuals. As per the official press note, VFX studios from Los Angeles have already created AI-driven designs to depict the time period authentically.
The screenplay has been jointly crafted by Hirani, Abhijat Joshi, Hindukush Bharadwaj, and Avishkar Bharadwaj — a team that has reportedly been immersed in Phalke’s world for years. The script draws from exhaustive research and rare anecdotes, many of which have been shared by Phalke’s own grandson, Chandrashekhar Srikrishna Pusalkar, who has lent extensive support to the project.
Meanwhile, Aamir Khan will next be seen in the upcoming ‘Sitaare Zameen Par’, described as the spiritual sequel to his beloved 2007 film ‘Taare Zameen Par’. The film is scheduled to hit theatres on June 20. The actor is expected to shift focus to the Dadasaheb Phalke biopic soon after its release.
With two cinematic powerhouses back together and a subject as monumental as Phalke’s legacy, expectations are already sky-high for what promises to be one of the most significant films in Aamir Khan’s career.
