Chetan Jhawar has stepped into a new leadership role at Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios as Head of Hindi Original Movies, marking a significant development in the platform’s India content strategy.
Jhawar announced the update through a LinkedIn post, where he shared his excitement about leading the Hindi Original Movies division and scaling the studio’s film slate across both theatrical and streaming platforms. The move comes at a time when global streaming giants are aggressively expanding their Indian originals business with a sharper focus on locally rooted storytelling and franchise-driven content.
In his post, Jhawar said he looks forward to building “audience-first stories,” while continuing to collaborate with creative partners and filmmakers. He also expressed gratitude towards Amazon’s leadership and the India Originals Movies team for their collaboration and support.
“Thrilled to step into a new role as Head of Hindi Original Movies at Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios,” Jhawar wrote in the post.
He further added, “I’m excited to scale our Original movies across theatrical and streaming, building audience-first stories, keeping an ear to the ground, and working with partners we truly believe in.”
The appointment signals Amazon’s continued push to strengthen its Hindi film ecosystem in India, especially as competition intensifies between streaming platforms for premium original content and theatrical collaborations.
Over the last few years, Prime Video has steadily expanded its India Originals slate across films and series, while also deepening partnerships with leading production houses, creators and actors. With Amazon MGM Studios increasingly integrating theatrical ambitions alongside streaming releases, Jhawar’s new role is expected to play a key part in shaping the next phase of Hindi original movie production for the platform.
His statement also hinted at a dual-focus strategy where theatrical and OTT storytelling could coexist more closely, reflecting the changing dynamics of India’s entertainment business.
The development has already drawn attention across the media and entertainment industry, with several professionals and creators congratulating Jhawar on his new role through social media.
