The Delhi High Court has allowed the OTT release of ‘Dhurandhar 2’ despite objections over the use of the song ‘Rang De Lal (Oye Oye)’, a remix version linked to the popular track ‘Tirchi Topiwale’ from the 1989 film ‘Tridev’.
According to a PTI report, Justice Tushar Rao Gedela refused to grant interim relief sought by ‘Tridev’ producer Trimurti Films, which had approached the court seeking to stop the streaming release of ‘Dhurandhar: The Revenge’ over the alleged unauthorised use of its song as part of the background score.
In an interim order passed on May 14, the court observed that the film had already been released in theatres with the same allegedly infringing track. The judge noted that restraining the OTT release at this stage would create an “incongruous situation” and described such a move as “inconceivable”.
The legal dispute revolves around the use of the iconic ‘Tirchi Topiwale’ composition from Rajiv Rai’s 1989 action film ‘Tridev’. Trimurti Films argued that the recreated version used in ‘Dhurandhar 2’ infringed upon its rights and sought urgent intervention before the film’s digital premiere.
However, the High Court declined to halt the streaming release while the matter continues to be heard. The court’s observation effectively clears the way for the film’s OTT debut, which has already generated strong buzz following its theatrical run.
The decision comes at a time when remixes, recreated tracks and legacy Bollywood music continue to spark copyright disputes within the entertainment industry, especially as films increasingly target multi-platform releases across theatres and streaming services.
‘Dhurandhar: The Revenge’ has been in the spotlight for its action-heavy narrative and large-scale digital premiere plans, with the makers preparing for its streaming rollout despite the ongoing legal battle surrounding the song usage.
