Amazon MGM Studios has announced a series adaptation of Rebecca Yarros’ bestselling fantasy novels ‘Fourth Wing’ for Prime Video, expanding one of publishing’s biggest recent fantasy phenomena into television. The upcoming series will follow 20-year-old Violet Sorrengail as she enters the dangerous world of Basgiath War College and competes to become a dragon rider. The studio revealed the project during its annual Upfront presentation in New York City and said further details on casting, crew and release timelines will be shared later.
According to the announcement, Meredith Averill will adapt the novels for television while serving as showrunner and executive producer. Averill is known for her work on ‘The Haunting of Hill House’ and ‘Locke & Key’. Lisa Joy, executive producer of ‘Fallout’ and co-founder of Kilter Films, is attached to direct the pilot episode.
The project will also bring together a broad producing team from several companies. Jonathan Nolan and Athena Wickham will executive produce alongside Joy through Kilter Films, while Michael B. Jordan and Elizabeth Raposo will executive produce through Outlier Society. Liz Pelletier and Sherryl Clark are also attached as executive producers through Premeditated Productions. Yarros herself will serve as executive producer on the adaptation of her novels.
Amazon described ‘Fourth Wing’ as the first book in Yarros’ ongoing Empyrean series, which became a global publishing sensation. The story centers on Violet Sorrengail, who is pushed by her mother into the elite and brutal training world of Navarre’s dragon riders. Amazon said the books have attracted millions of readers with a mix of fantasy, romance and high-stakes action. ()
Prime Video has already renewed the yet-to-debut series for a second season, according to the announcement. Amazon also highlighted that the Empyrean books, including ‘Fourth Wing’, are available through Amazon in print, Kindle, Audible and Kindle Unlimited formats, with syncing features between Kindle and Audible designed to let readers move seamlessly between reading and listening.
The company positioned the adaptation alongside its broader fantasy and book-to-screen slate on Prime Video, which includes titles such as ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’, ‘Scarpetta’, ‘Reacher’ and ‘Cross’. Amazon said the article will continue to be updated as more information about the ‘Fourth Wing’ series becomes available.
