The Walt Disney Company-owned 20th Century Studios’ ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’ made a dazzling return to theaters this weekend, delivering an exceptional opening around the world. The eagerly awaited sequel to the 2006 classic grossed an estimated $233.6 million worldwide in its opening weekend.
According to a Disney statement on May 3, the box office collections included $77 million domestically and $156.6 million internationally, marking one of the strongest theatrical debuts of 2026.
The movie, which reunites the original main cast of Meryl Streep, future Disney Legend Anne Hathway, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci with Director David Frankel, posted the second-highest Motion Picture Association (MPA) global opening of 2026 so far.
‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’ has already generated 72 percent of the total box office earned by the original film, which finished its theatrical run at $326 million globally, the statement added.
The movie debuted at No. 1 at the domestic box office, delivering an opening weekend that was nearly three times larger than the original film’s opening. The film’s strong start reflects a love from fans of the original with enthusiasm from a new generation of moviegoers.
“It’s not meant to just be a love letter to the fans,” Aline Brosh McKenna, screenwriter/executive producer, said, adding, “It had to be something, a story that we found meaty and something we could really talk about how the world has changed. It’s not nostalgia.”
Internationally, the sequel delivered the second-highest MPA international opening of 2026 and represents the highest opening weekend ever for Meryl Streep across domestic, international, and global markets.
