Filmmaker S. S. Rajamouli’s upcoming magnum opus ‘Varanasi’ continues to build massive anticipation ahead of its release, with producer S. S. Karthikeya offering new insights into the scale and vision behind the project. The film, starring Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, and Prithviraj Sukumaran, has already emerged as one of the most talked-about Indian films in recent times.
The film first drew global attention after its glimpse was showcased at the Trailer Festival held at Le Grand Rex, widely regarded as Europe’s largest iconic screen venue. The preview reportedly received an overwhelming response from the audience, with strong reactions including applause, cheers, and whistles from the very first frames, reflecting the scale of anticipation surrounding the project.
Adding to the global buzz, ‘Varanasi’ was also presented at Comic Con Experience Mexico 2026, where producer S. S. Karthikeya spoke in detail about the creative process behind building the film’s world. He explained that the story is deeply rooted in the city of Varanasi, often referred to as the spiritual capital of India, and one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities.
He further revealed that director S. S. Rajamouli envisioned elaborate sequences set in the ghats of Varanasi, which posed significant logistical challenges for on-location shooting. As a result, the production team undertook extensive groundwork, sending the design unit to the city to study its textures, dimensions, and visual references in detail. Based on this research, entire sets replicating the ghats were constructed “brick by brick” to authentically bring the director’s vision to life.
The film has already created significant online buzz with the unveiling of key character looks—Mahesh Babu as Rudhra, Prithviraj Sukumaran as Kumbha, and Priyanka Chopra Jonas as Mandakini. Each character reveal has sparked strong reactions on social media, further heightening anticipation for the project.
With its ambitious scale, detailed world-building, and high-profile cast, Varanasi is positioned as a major cinematic event, scheduled for a grand theatrical release on April 7, 2027.
