The iconic Bollywood classic ‘Umrao Jaan’, starring Rekha, is set to be showcased at the UK Asian Film Festival 2026, bringing the timeless story back to international audiences. The restored version of the film will be screened across multiple venues in the UK in May.
According to an ANI report, the announcement was made via the festival’s official social media handle, confirming that the restored print by the National Film Archive of India will be screened on May 7, 9 and 10. The screenings are scheduled at venues including Tyneside Cinema, Phoenix Leicester and Lanternhouse Cinema, with one of the shows to be followed by a Q&A session with director Muzaffar Ali.
The film, set in 19th-century Lucknow, traces the journey of ‘Umrao Jaan’ from an abducted child to a celebrated courtesan and poetess. Known for its evocative storytelling, music and visual richness, the film continues to be regarded as a landmark in Indian cinema, capturing themes of longing, artistry and resilience.
This is not the first time the restored version has been showcased. It was previously screened at the 56th International Film Festival of India under the National Film Heritage Mission and has also seen a re-release in theatres, including a screening in Delhi last year. The restoration effort has played a key role in preserving the film’s legacy for newer audiences.
Rekha’s performance in the film earned her the National Award, and her portrayal of the courtesan-poetess remains one of the most celebrated in Indian cinema. Songs like ‘Dil Cheez Kya Hai’ continue to hold a special place among film enthusiasts.
Reflecting on the film’s enduring appeal, Muzaffar Ali has described ‘Umrao Jaan’ as “timeless” and “ageless,” noting that its authenticity and attention to detail keep it relevant even today. He has also indicated plans to take the film to more festivals and eventually to OTT platforms, ensuring that its legacy continues to reach wider audiences across the world.
