The Hindi film industry is gearing up for a busy May at the box office, with a diverse mix of historical dramas, romantic entertainers and family-centric films lined up for release. From large-scale period storytelling to light-hearted rom-coms, the month promises something for every section of the audience.
According to an ANI report, several highly anticipated films are scheduled to hit theatres through May, setting up potential box office clashes as well as varied viewing choices for moviegoers. The line-up reflects a shift back towards theatrical releases across genres after a phase dominated by action-heavy films.
Kicking off the month is ‘Raja Shivaji’, directed by and starring Riteish Deshmukh, which is set to release on May 1. The film brings to life the legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, with Genelia Deshmukh playing a key role. The ensemble cast also includes Sanjay Dutt and Abhishek Bachchan, among others, adding scale and depth to the historical narrative. Presented by Jio Studios, the film will release in Marathi, Hindi and Telugu.
Following this, ‘Daadi Ki Shaadi’ starring Kapil Sharma and Neetu Kapoor is scheduled to arrive in theatres on May 8. Positioned as a family entertainer, the film explores relationships, emotions and generational dynamics, blending humour with warmth.
Mid-month, audiences will see the release of ‘Pati Patni Aur Woh Do’ on May 15, featuring Ayushmann Khurrana, Sara Ali Khan, Rakul Preet Singh and Wamiqa Gabbi. Set against the backdrop of Prayagraj, the film takes the familiar love triangle trope and expands it into a chaotic romantic comedy involving multiple relationships, misunderstandings and comic twists.
Towards the end of the month, ‘Chand Mera Dil’ will hit theatres on May 22. The romantic drama stars Lakshya and Ananya Panday in lead roles and is backed by Dharma Productions. The film explores an intense love story that moves from moments of joy to emotional conflict, highlighting the complexities of modern relationships.
Sharing the same release date is ‘Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai’, which marks the reunion of Varun Dhawan with his father David Dhawan. Also starring Mrunal Thakur and Pooja Hegde, the film promises a return to classic Bollywood rom-com territory with a colourful, high-energy narrative built around a love triangle. The teaser has already hinted at a blend of humour, music and nostalgia, including a refreshed version of a popular track from Biwi No. 1.
With such a varied slate, May is shaping up to be a crucial month for Bollywood, not just in terms of box office performance but also in testing audience appetite across genres. The mix of historical storytelling, romance and comedy could offer the industry a well-rounded theatrical run after recent trends.
