The much-loved ‘Scooby-Doo’ franchise is getting a fresh live-action treatment, with production officially underway in Atlanta for a new series titled ‘Scooby-Doo: Origins’. The makers confirmed the title as filming began, marking a new chapter for the iconic mystery-solving gang created by Hanna-Barbera.
According to a PTI report, the series reimagines the origins of the beloved characters, bringing a modern twist to the classic story. Set during a final summer at camp, the narrative follows old friends Shaggy and Daphne, played by Tanner Hagen and Mckenna Grace, who find themselves drawn into a haunting mystery. At the centre of the story is a lonely Great Dane puppy that may hold clues to a supernatural murder, setting the tone for a darker, more layered storyline.
The ‘Scooby-Doo’ universe, which first introduced audiences to Fred Jones, Daphne Blake, Velma Dinkley, Shaggy Rogers and their talking dog, originally aired on CBS from 1969 to 1976 before moving to ABC, where multiple versions continued until 1986. Over the decades, the franchise has remained a pop culture staple, known for its blend of humour, mystery and supernatural intrigue.
The upcoming series is a major collaboration between Warner Bros. Television and Netflix. The creative team is led by Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg, who will serve as writers and showrunners under their Midnight Radio banner, alongside executive producers André Nemec, Sarah Schechter and Jeff Pinkner.
Midnight Radio is known for projects such as the live-action adaptation of Cowboy Bebop, as well as the MGM series From and writing credits on Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. With ‘Scooby-Doo: Origins’, the team aims to revisit the franchise’s roots while presenting it in a contemporary, cinematic format for a new generation of viewers.
As production progresses, the series is expected to blend nostalgia with a fresh narrative approach, offering fans both familiar characters and a redefined origin story.
