‘Aadu 3’ to premiere on ZEE5 on May 1 with multi-timeline story

ZEE5

Malayalam cinema’s popular Aadu franchise is set for a significant expansion as ‘Aadu 3’ prepares to premiere on ZEE5 on May 1. Written and directed by Midhun Manuel Thomas, the film marks the third instalment in the series and the first part of a planned two-film epic, taking the franchise into a more ambitious narrative space.

The project brings back its familiar ensemble, led by Jayasurya as Shaji Pappan, alongside Saiju Kurup, Vinayakan, Renji Panicker, Vijay Babu, Sunny Wayne, Dharmajan Bolgatty, Bhagath Manuel, Indrans, Bijukuttan, Sudhi Koppa, and Harikrishnan, all reprising their roles. New additions including Alleya Bourne and Krishna Jeev further widen the scope of the story.

Unlike the earlier films, which built a cult following through their humour and quirky characters, ‘Aadu 3’ shifts gears with a layered narrative spanning multiple timelines. The story unfolds across a dystopian future, colonial-era Kerala, and the present day, weaving together events that intersect across centuries.

In the futuristic timeline set in 2370, Earth is controlled by an authoritarian regime known as the Organization, which is in pursuit of a rare celestial element called Star Dust, believed to have the power to alter timelines. Parallelly, in 1790, Maharaja Padmanabhan Thampuran guards a secret tied to the same substance amid political unrest, colonial pressures, and looming threats of invasion.

Back in the present, Shaji Pappan and his group find themselves entangled in a conspiracy that connects their lives to these distant timelines. As the narrative progresses, actions in one era begin to influence outcomes in another, eventually leading to a rupture that sends characters across time.

Director Midhun Manuel Thomas said the film was conceived with long-form storytelling in mind, noting that the Aadu series has historically found a strong audience beyond theatrical runs. He added that the OTT release allows viewers to engage more deeply with its expanded scale and layered storytelling while retaining the franchise’s signature irreverence.

Jayasurya, who takes on dual roles in the film, described the experience as both challenging and rewarding, highlighting how the characters’ decisions echo across timelines. He expressed confidence that audiences will discover these nuances when the film premieres digitally.

With its blend of humour, science fiction, and historical drama, ‘Aadu 3’ signals a bold evolution for the franchise, aiming to retain its core identity while exploring a far more expansive cinematic universe.
